A US man has reportedly been crushed to death by a machine that reduces waste volume, as he looked for his missing mobile phone.
Roger Mirro, from Palatine, Illinois, apparently died of multiple crushing injuries after being trapped inside the trash compactor.
His death was ruled an accident, the Cook County medical examiner's office said.
Mr Mirro's wife, whose name has not been not released, said she last spoke with him on the phone as she left for work, telling him she was going out with friends, police said.
When she returned more than four hours later, she could not find him.
A neighbour told police Mr Mirro, 56, went to his apartment asking for a key to the bin room in the parking garage, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Mr Mirro told his neighbour he had lost his mobile phone and he thought it might have dropped down the rubbish chute, according to police.
Shortly after he reportedly stepped into the giant trash compactor, it turned on and crushed him.
When officers later entered the room, they discovered a ladder propped up against the machine.
Mr Mirro's body was inside, with signs of trauma caused by the compactor, police said.
Cook County Deputy Chief Alan Stoeckel called the death "a terrible accident".
